WHIPLASH

One of the common causes of neck injury, whiplash is a result of sudden acceleration – deceleration forces on the neck.

The injury encompasses a variety of issues affecting the neck muscles, joints, bones, ligaments and nerves in the area.
Generally, whiplash results from a traumatic event involving suddenly deceleration (i.e. car accidents, sudden braking). Also, whiplash can occur from activities such as roller coasters, bungy jumping and collision in sports.

SYMPTOMS

The symptoms of whiplash can be dependent on the severity of whiplash and between people. The most common symptom is neck pain or stiffness of the neck muscles and area. Some other symptoms may include:

  • Neck pain or stiffness
  • Headache
  • Shoulder, arm and upper back pain
  • Altered sensation
  • Weakness
  • Visual Disturbance
  • Hearing difficulties

DIAGNOSIS

Whiplash can be clinically diagnosed based of the history of your injury and thorough clinical testing. Radiological testing (X-ray, MRI etc.) can be useful to identify injury to specific structures; vertebrae, disc and muscles.

TREATMENT

Due to its nature, the treatments for whiplash may vary due to the severity of the injury. The possible treatment methods include:

  • Continuing daily regime and it’ll return
  • Exercise to encourage flexibility and strength
  • Neck muscle and proprioception retraining programs
  • Acupuncture or dry needling for pain relief
  • Joint mobilisation or manipulation to loosen stiff joints
  • Shockwave therapy

The aim of these treatments is to reduce neck pain, normalise range of motion and strengthen your associated muscles.
